With notable participation despite the rain, the Parade of Lights has become a consolidated tourist product that promotes economic dynamism and showcases Campeche’s traditions.
The mayor’s office organized the third edition of this event and contest. The winners were Xibalbá (individual Open Category), T´alk´uma´aak´ab (individual Minor Category), and Altarcito Campechano (Group Minor Category). A total prize pool of 56,000 pesos was awarded.
The mayor’s office added a new attraction to Campeche’s capital, boosting the economic dynamism in commercial areas such as image design, clothing, footwear, cosmetics, silkscreen printing, transformation, music, services, and food.
At the head of the parade were around 600 participants. The municipal president of Campeche, Biby Rabelo de la Torre, greeted the people waiting for the rain to pass in the Historic Center after conducting a social media survey asking what was happening with the parade due to the rain flooding some streets in the area.
The Festival of Lights has been on Campeche’s calendar of activities for three years now. Alongside the parade, various events are held such as exhibitions by merchants selling products to make traditional pibipollo and assemble accessories for home altars in Campeche.
Regarding tourism, tourist guides request permits to conduct night tours in cemeteries like last year when the Route of Legends took place at the Cemetery of San Román. A costumed guide told local legends to national and international tourists.
Cultural events were not neglected either; concerts, performances, and presentations were held in conjunction with various departments of the mayor’s office at Pasaje Román Piña Chan.
In addition, a Concert of Lights took place next to the Baluartes de San Carlos in the Historic Center featuring La Travesía and Grupo Tornado after the parade.
