Why did the Beatles never perform in Mexico?

¿Por qué los Beatles nunca se presentaron en México?

Paul McCartney, probably the most beloved member of The Beatles, returns to Mexico as part of his “Got Back Tour 2024” marking his seventh visit to the country, now performing concerts at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey and the GNP Seguros Forum in Mexico City.

Although it may seem hard to believe, when the so-called “Beatlemania” was in full force in the world, with the group giving concerts on tours that would mark the history of music, the quartet never set foot on Mexican soil to offer an unprecedented show.

The Beatles’ shows

In the 60s, four young people from Liverpool, England, captured the attention of the music world, their songs marked a new direction within pop and rock and roll, in addition to generating a media phenomenon around their performances.

Their shows were a combination of energy and unbridled excitement that generated an effect on their fans that was quite difficult to understand and assimilate with what can be seen in a show today.

One of the most notable aspects of these concerts was the incessant shouting of the fans, mostly teenagers. The Beatles could barely hear themselves on stage due to the intensity.

From 1962 to 1966, when it was their last live performance, the group visited various countries from France to Japan, passing through the United States and Canada, even performing in the Philippines and Hong Kong.

Why were they never in Mexico?

Despite what one might believe, with various North American tours, The Beatles never performed in Mexico, although of course there was an attempt to bring the legendary band, specifically in 1965 for a show in Mexico City but Ernesto P. Uruchurtu, the then regent of the capital, denied permission, arguing that the group was a “bad influence” for Mexican youth.

For Uruchurtu and many conservative sectors of the time, the Beatles represented rebellion and questioning of traditional values, with their appearance, long hairstyles and musical style that went against social norms. This conservative vision, which predominated in the government of the time, looked askance at any expression that could encourage youth towards ideas or behaviors considered subversive.

Political censorship was not the only reason why the Beatles never gave one of their concerts in Mexico, in addition to the fact that the country did not have a venue capable of supporting an event of this magnitude.

It was not until 1993, when Paul McCartney gave the first concert by a member of The Beatles in Mexico, with the Palacio de los Deportes being the venue on November 2.
