Shooting in Oaxaca restaurant leaves 5 dead; they were trying to attack a transport leader

El líder de transportistas al parecer era el objetivo del atentado

A shooting in a restaurant north of the capital of Oaxaca left a preliminary balance of five dead and one injured. The incident took place before 10 p.m. this Thursday at the Che Gaucho restaurant, located on Las Rosas Street, corner with Álamos.

Among the fatalities were the bodyguards of Marcos Sánchez, leader of the International Confederation of Workers of Oaxaca (CITO).

The first versions indicate that Sánchez, who was also at the scene, could have been hit by the bullets, although so far the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office has not officially confirmed this among the victims.

After the attack, public security elements were deployed to the site to cordon off the area and allow emergency services to attend to the injured person, whose health status is still unknown.

Marcos Sánchez was released in 2021 after spending four years in prison accused of homicide. His connection to last night’s attack is still under investigation by the authorities.

On his social media, Governor Salomón Jara Cruz stated:

“In relation to the events that occurred in Colonia Reforma, I have instructed the Secretariat of Citizen Security to reinforce surveillance and to assist with the investigations already being carried out by the State Attorney General’s Office.

There will be no impunity and we will not allow violence to threaten the tranquility of the people of Oaxaca.”
