Baja California Sur participated in the International Conference on Carbon Neutrality 2024, in recognition of the achievements made for the project to create the First Transfer Station for Organic Waste in the city of La Paz, which will allow the reduction of methane emissions through the use of organic waste.
In this sense, the head of the Secretariat of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment and Natural Resources (SEPUIMM), Carolina Armenta Cervantes, presented the project that uses vermicompost to use the production of humus and leachate that contributes to soil conservation and prevents organic waste from reaching the landfill.
The above is part of the action platform on waste in Baja California Sur, coordinated by SEPUIMM, which received partial funding of 25 thousand USD from the Future Fund 2024 call from the International Climate Group organization, which will authorize the construction of the first stage of a vermicompost in the city of La Paz.
In view of this, Armenta Cervantes, highlighted that these achievements have been possible thanks to community strengthening and coordination with the City Council of La Paz, Ponguinguiola, Alliance for Food Security (ASA) and the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur.
He added that, in the expansion of the project, which incorporates vermicompost technology, there will be a processing capacity of up to 95 tons of organic waste per year, with a mitigation potential of 4.8 methane emissions and 134.4 carbon dioxide equivalent.
The conference brought together international civil society organisations, national and subnational leaders, to demonstrate how local climate leadership and multi-level action can drive the development of projects with mitigation potential of global climate significance.
