Despite the fact that images of Israel Íñiguez Ramírez posing with weapons for the exclusive use of the Mexican Army and showing off vests with the insignia of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) were spread, the politician assumed office as mayor of Apulco, Zacatecas.
Since last August, the media outlet Dominio Público spread the images that Íñiguez Ramírez showed off on his social networks, in which he was seen wearing a vest with a skull similar to that of the character “Punisher” that is frequently used by the CJNG.
In other images he is seen dressed in military-type tactical equipment, hooded and carrying high-caliber weapons; in addition to showing his altar to Santa Muerte accompanied by war corridos alluding to the cartel led by Nemesio El Mencho Oseguera Cervantes.
Despite the constant journalistic complaints against him, on November 2 he was sworn in as mayor of the Apulco Zacatecas City Council, whose body was vacated by an investigation against Mauro Yuriel Jáuregui Muñoz, also linked to Zacatecan drug trafficking.
After three days of his protest, the Congress of Zacatecas issued an official letter to announce the news and confirm the appointment.
Mayor of Apulco under scrutiny for alleged links to the CJNG
CJNG in Apulco, Zacatecas
The images are not recent, they were published in 2023 on their social networks, but they were disseminated during Mauro Jáuregui’s campaign for mayor of Apulco, in what the Movimiento Ciudadano politician described as a “political coup.”
Another alleged link between Jáuregui and organized crime was a call made between him; a police officer whose two relatives had been kidnapped; and Gerardo González Ramírez, alias El Apa or El Gera, a CJNG plaza boss who walks around the streets of Apulco with total impunity.
Despite his alleged links to the Zacatecas drug trade, Mauro Jáuregui was sworn in as mayor of Apulco on September 15; however, in the legislative session of the local congress on October 31, the request for removal of immunity requested by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was read.
The investigation by the Attorney General’s Office is aimed at the crimes of criminal association and qualified homicide in perjury of two people, for which reason they requested the withdrawal of their procedural immunity (removal of immunity) and immediate separation from their position.
Since then, Mauro Jáuregui has been a fugitive from justice and his substitute is now the mayor of Apulco, despite appearing in uniform of one of the two most powerful cartels in the country.
