Cruise tourism in Cozumel grows 14.5% in passenger flow

Cozumel continues to strengthen its position as one of the Caribbean’s preferred destinations in the cruise segment.

As of October 31, 2024, the island has registered 1,035 arrivals, representing an increase of 11.3% compared to the same period last year.

According to Vagner Elbiorn Vega, general director of the Quintana Roo Port Authority (Apiqroo), the flow of passengers also experienced a notable growth, going from 3,260,568 to 3,733,847 visitors, an increase of 14.5%.

Expected growth at the end of 2024

In 2023, Cozumel received 1,156 cruise ships and more than 4 million passengers. By 2024, these numbers are expected to be surpassed, with a projection of 1,273 arrivals and an estimated 4,563,364 passengers, consolidating Isla de las Golondrinas as a favorite destination for cruises.

“This increase shows the continued strengthening of tourism in the region and positions Cozumel as one of the preferred destinations in the Caribbean in this segment,” said Elbiorn Vega.

Thanks to its infrastructure and tourist appeal, Cozumel has generated approximately 483 million dollars between 2023 and 2024, ranking second globally after the Bahamas, which records revenues of 654 million dollars in the cruise sector, according to Business Research & Economic Advisors (BREA).

The Resilient Lady arrives in Mahahual

The Bahamian-flagged M/S Resilient Lady cruise ship with a capacity for 2,770 passengers arrived for the first time at the port of Mahahual this Tuesday, standing out for its focus on sustainable tourism.

After its stopover in Mahahual, the Resilient Lady will arrive in Cozumel on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, where it is expected to attract hundreds of tourists interested in enjoying the island’s natural and cultural wealth.

With 277.20 meters long and a gross weight of 108,192 tons, this “floating hotel” reaffirms Cozumel’s status as a key port in the cruise industry worldwide.

The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur) highlights that in the last week of October, 26 cruise ships arrived in Cozumel, closing the month with a significant flow of visitors.

With this growth trend, Cozumel remains a highly competitive destination in the Caribbean, attracting millions of tourists seeking unforgettable experiences and contributing significantly to the region’s economy.
