On November 5, the theft of gondolas, which were full of gold and other minerals, was reported in Zacatecas. Later, several containers were found in Durango, but these were found empty, according to the authorities.

On Thursday, October 14, the delegate of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Durango, Víctor Fernando Ruiz Méndez, had a meeting with the media in which he confirmed that nine gondolas were found in Coahuila territory. The reports indicate that it is a shipment with an approximate value of 50 million dollars.

When the elements of the National Guard made the discovery, there were only containers, since no tractor-trailers were found either.

“They are empty, we do not have further indications of the material, we do not know where it is and for that the investigations will be carried out,” said Ruiz Méndez.

So far it is not known if they were transported to Durango already empty or if they were deposited in the area. In addition, no one was arrested during the seizure of the gondolas in the La Fe community, located in the municipality of Cuencamé.

The robbery occurred at the Peñasquito mine and the affected company is a US transnational company called Newmont. At the time, the coordinator of the National Guard in Zacatecas, Juan Manríquez Morena, assured that the gondolas would have been transported by other vehicles.

“In a period of about an hour after we were notified of the information of the theft of the mineral, a strong deployment was made, but we were unable to recover the gondolas, because apparently there were other tractor-trailers that were able to hook them and they were able to get out of the area,” the official indicated at the time.

“It is full of suspicion, it is like a well-planned robbery”; David Monreal
Also in a meeting with the media, the governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal, said that the case is surrounded by “suspicion” and took the opportunity to question the way in which someone can move the aforementioned structures.

“When it has a value like the one they have been expressing, higher than 50 million dollars, then you don’t leave it adrift […] there are many things in speculation, from how you move and how you steal gondolas of that size,” said the official.

So far it is not known if the robbery would be the responsibility of some organized crime group, since the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) operate in Zacatecas.
