Grandmother’s Heroic Act Saves Grandson in San Nicolás Fire

A grandmother’s quick thinking saved her grandson from serious injury after their home on Santa Clara 611, Industrias del Vidrio Street, in San Nicolás, caught fire.

Betzabé Martínez, 36, and her 5-year-old grandson, Oliver, were trapped on the second floor of their home as fire and smoke engulfed the building. Neighbors arrived to assist in the rescue.

Betzabé tied her grandson with an extension cord and began lowering him from the second-floor window. A neighbor on the sidewalk caught Oliver, and Betzabé then jumped from the window herself.

Civil Protection of Nuevo Leon, municipal authorities, and firefighters responded to the scene, extinguishing the fire that consumed 80 percent of the home’s furniture and a vehicle in the garage. Betzabé and Oliver suffered symptoms of smoke inhalation, and Betzabé sustained an injury to her left ankle from the fall.

Apolinar Olivares Orozco, 51, the neighbor who assisted in the rescue, suffered first-degree burns on his chest and arm. His bravery and quick action were crucial in saving the lives of Betzabé and Oliver.
