Roads in Mexico are essential for the development and operation of the country, but unfortunately not all of them are in good condition and there is a great challenge in this matter. How many roads in Mexico are in good condition? Here we share it with you.
The network of feeder and rural roads in Mexico has a total length of 266,598 kilometers (km), of which 39% or 103,217 kilometers are in poor condition, according to the diagnosis presented this month in the Statement of Reasons for the 2025 Economic Package.
Meanwhile, 48% is in regular condition and only 13% is reported to be in good condition, according to the first diagnosis carried out by the Government of President Claudia Sheinbaum on the circumstances in which the most used roads and infrastructure in the country were delivered.
Behind the deterioration is the reduction of public investments in regular maintenance and the decrease in activities within the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), analysts said.
In the previous administration, data on the conditions of these roads was no longer shared, although the latest government report by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recognizes that 24% of the federal highway network, which consists of 44,600 kilometers, is of poor quality according to international standards.
The latter has the most important connections that are toll-free, while the federal toll network, operated by Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe) and the concessionaire companies, covers a total of 10,000 kilometers.

The head of SICT, Jesús Esteva, recognized the problem and at the beginning of this month, gave the progress of the program called Bachetón, which seeks to maintain and improve the quality of the roads.
“We have started with these two works, what we call patching and mapping in the entire federal toll-free highway network, which has a length of 44,600 kilometers,” he announced.
