In celebration of the 175th anniversary of San Miguel de Cozumel’s founding, the municipal administration, led by José Luis Chacón Méndez, organized the event “Soul Kin: The Path of Love.” This celebration highlighted the rich Mayan cultural heritage and reaffirmed the identity of this iconic Caribbean island.
The event, organized by the Directorate of Tourism and the Subdirectorate of Culture, took place at the Explanada de la Bandera on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue. Despite a partially cloudy sky, attendees enjoyed a spectacular sunset, with the golden rays of Itzamná, the sun god, illuminating the Mexican Caribbean horizon.
Rituals, Dance, and Mystical Connection
The day began with a gratitude ritual dedicated to the sun god and the moon goddess, followed by a pre-Hispanic show that captivated both national and international tourists. The celebration continued with the “Route of Love,” leading participants to the monument of Ixchel, the moon goddess, in Benito Juárez Park.
At this symbolic location, shaman William Carrillo performed a purification ceremony, filling the air with the sacred aroma of copal, while attendees offered flowers as a tribute to the Mayan goddess. The pre-Hispanic dance group “Julkiin” energized the crowd with their symbolic performances, transporting them to an ancestral era. The “Corazón Caribe” ensemble concluded the evening with traditional melodies that encouraged families to dance and enjoy the festivities.
Gastronomy and Crafts: A Local Touch
The event featured a gastronomic and artisan corridor, offering attendees the chance to taste typical dishes and purchase unique items crafted by local artisans. This initiative strengthened the local economy and fostered community pride.
Honoring Cozumel’s Cultural Heritage
“Soul Kin: The Path of Love” was more than just a show; it was a gathering that honored the island’s cultural legacy. Such initiatives highlight Cozumel not only as a world-class tourist destination but also as a place where Mayan identity and tradition remain vibrant, offering unforgettable experiences for visitors.
