Controversy Erupts Over Eviction of Street Vendors in Holbox

Last weekend, municipal authorities evicted street vendors from the vicinity of the main park on the island of Holbox, citing a lack of necessary permits to operate on public roads.

Authorities Involved

The operation involved personnel from:

– The Inspection Area

– Public Security

– Secretariat of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan)

– Fire Department

– Secretariat of the Navy

During the intervention, 20 businesses were seized and sent to the mayor’s offices for administrative sanctioning procedures.

Vendors’ Testimonies

Unofficially, some merchants indicated that the eviction was partly due to the lack of first aid kits and fire extinguishers in their stalls. They were given five business days to regularize their documentation.

José Cruz Reyes, one of the affected vendors, expressed concern that the measure might have political motivations. He recalled that during the previous administration of municipal president Nivardo Mena Villanueva, he had to seek federal protection to continue working.

Social Media Reactions

The Amemos la Isla de Holbox page was flooded with comments lamenting the authorities’ actions. Many users pointed out that these measures directly impact the local economy and suggested prioritizing actions such as repairing potholed roads, which harm the island’s tourist image.
