The rise of vacation rentals on digital platforms has significantly impacted Cozumel’s hotel industry, leading to a 10% annual decrease in room night occupancy. Beatriz Tinajero Tarriba, president of the Cozumel Hotel Association, highlighted that this trend has been affecting organized establishments for over five years.

Tinajero Tarriba explained that while hotels previously achieved full occupancy even during low seasons, the growing preference for vacation rentals has drastically reduced the number of guests. She emphasized the need for vacation rentals to contribute equitably to taxes and fees, just like traditional hotels.
Call for Supervision and Fair Collection
Despite existing legislation, the lack of supervision and a dedicated body to collect taxes has allowed vacation rentals to bypass these obligations. Tinajero Tarriba suggested that the revenue from these taxes could be used to promote the destination and improve its tourist infrastructure.
Impact on International Events
The disparity is evident during international events that once filled hotels to 100% capacity. Currently, occupancy barely reaches 70%, even in host hotels, with others reporting even lower figures.
Urgent Call for Equity
Organized hoteliers are urging the government to establish supervision mechanisms and ensure fair tax collection. This would not only level the playing field between hotels and vacation rentals but also strengthen the local economy by providing more resources for promoting and developing Cozumel as a tourist destination.
