American Airlines to Suspend Charlotte-Tulum Route in 2025

Earlier this year, American Airlines introduced international flights to Tulum, Mexico, from three US destinations: Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Miami. However, the airline has decided to remove the Charlotte route from its network, suspending the service next year.

Suspension of Charlotte-Tulum Service

American Airlines will cease flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Tulum International Airport (TQO) on February 13, 2025. The route, launched in March alongside flights from Dallas and Miami, will be discontinued as part of the airline’s network evaluation.

Growing Popularity of Tulum

Tulum has become an increasingly popular travel destination, known for its picturesque beaches and forests. The recent operational status of Tulum’s airport, after years of construction, has further boosted travel to the region. American Airlines saw an opportunity to capitalize on this demand but has now decided to scale back.

Network Reevaluation

New routes are introduced with the potential for profitability, but various factors can lead to their suspension. American Airlines stated that the Charlotte-Tulum flight was cut as part of a continuous evaluation of its network. Brian Znotins, American’s network chief, explained that the industry had too much capacity to absorb all at once, leading to the decision to scale back.

While Charlotte loses this international connection, it will gain another one next year. As part of its European expansion for the summer of 2025, American Airlines will introduce a daily flight to Athens, Greece, starting June 5.

Passengers affected by the suspension of the Charlotte-Tulum service will be informed by the airline and accommodated on other flights.
