From Jalisco to Africa: Shipment of almost 300 kilos of methamphetamine stopped in the Port of Veracruz

As part of a joint operation, personnel from the Navy (Semar) and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) seized a shipment of almost 300 kilos of methamphetamine in the state of Veracruz, which was about to be sent to the African continent.

The narcotics were located in the Port of Veracruz, after Maritime Customs workers issued an alert about the possible presence of illicit substances inside a red container.

Upon requesting support from federal authorities, elements of the FGR and the Navy moved to the Veracruz port and proceeded to carry out an inspection of the export merchandise.

During these tasks, 3,840 rolls of plastic film were inspected, inside which the narcotic was found. “There were 592 transparent plastic bags hidden inside that contained a solid crystalline substance that was found to be methamphetamine,” said the FGR.

After a thorough inspection, 290 kilos of methamphetamine were counted. In the images shared by the authorities, it can be seen that the drug was packaged in transparent plastic bags, while the rolls of packaging were stacked on wooden pallets.

According to the FGR reports, the merchandise came from the state of Jalisco —main stronghold of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)— and had as its final destination the Republic of Cameroon, located in the central region of Africa.

Due to these events, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) opened an investigation file for the crime against health. However, there are no records of people arrested.

The seizure of methamphetamine was notified on Sunday morning, after Rocío Nahle was sworn in as the first female governor of the state of Veracruz. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, was also present at the event.

This seizure is in addition to the one made at the end of November, when Navy personnel intercepted 722 kilos of marijuana at the Veracruz Port Customs that were also going to be sent abroad.

The drug was distributed in 358 packages made with duct tape, which were found in 24 rectangular metal furniture. On this occasion, the marijuana came from Yucatan and was destined for the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean.

Days before, on November 24, the Semar had reported the seizure of 141 kilos of methamphetamine in the port of Veracruz, which represented an economic impact of more than 41 million pesos for drug trafficking groups.

The director of the Administration of the Port System of Veracruz, Carlos Ignacio Velázquez Tiscareño, indicated that these seizures were part of the results obtained by strengthening security in the Veracruz port.
