These are where there are cases of Klebsiella oxytoca
The outbreak of the bacteria Klebsiella oxytoca and Enterobacter cloacae has caused concern in Mexico, as it is seriously affecting three states. According to the Ministry of Health, 17 deaths have been recorded, of which 13 occurred in the State of Mexico, three in Michoacán and one in Guanajuato.
The victims include 16 premature newborns and a 14-year-old teenager. So far, health authorities have not detected new infections and estimate that the outbreak could be declared controlled by December 16, 2024. According to experts on the subject, these bacteria are opportunistic, which means that they are usually present in the body naturally, but can cause serious infections in hospital environments, especially in vulnerable patients.
Among the most frequent complications are bloodstream infections, hospital pneumonia and necrotizing enterocolitis. This outbreak of Klebsiella oxytoca is related to the contamination of intravenous solutions for total parenteral nutrition, so the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks immobilized the affected batches as a preventive measure.
Symptoms associated with the Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria
Patients infected by the Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria may show a series of symptoms that reflect the severity of the infection. Among the most common signs are high fever and chills, accompanied by abdominal pain.
In more advanced cases, those affected may experience a decrease in blood pressure, changes in the state of consciousness and difficulty breathing. These manifestations can evolve into sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response that is life-threatening if not treated promptly.
