Strong Winds Strand 60 Trucks in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec

The State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) has issued a warning to the public and motorists traveling on the La Venta – La Ventosa highway in the eastern Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. Due to strong north winds, the area poses a significant safety risk.

So far, the strong winds have caused three trailers with empty boxes to overturn, resulting in material damage. Additionally, 60 trailers are currently stranded on the La Venta, La Ventosa, and Santiago Niltepec highway sections.

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), this north wind event, associated with cold front number 14, is expected to last for the next 72 hours. Wind gusts of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour are forecasted for the La Venta-La Ventosa section, along with high waves and strong swells in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

The CEPCyGR has issued the following recommendations:

– Migrants are advised not to travel on foot or by vehicle in the eastern Isthmus of Tehuantepec due to the danger posed by the strong winds.

– Trailer drivers with empty boxes are warned to avoid traveling during periods of strong wind in the La Venta-La Ventosa section.

– Fishing cooperatives should evaluate meteorological and oceanographic conditions before conducting activities.

– Avoid fishing during times of strong wind and waves in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
