A meeting between families displaced by violence and Mazatlán Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez descended into chaos in the council room. The mayor had invited the families into City Hall from the esplanade.
Upon entering the council room, Mayor Palacios began discussing commitments, including a visit to Cvive to deliver promised support and sports equipment for the children. However, as she addressed the children, representatives of the displaced families interrupted, calling her a “liar” and mocking her with laughter and applause.
Mayor Palacios repeatedly asked for respect from Bruno Torres, José Carlos, and the attendees. She emphasized that while some demands fall under the state government’s responsibility, the municipality would address its own obligations. She mentioned that medicine for the dispensary was already secured and that the water issue was being handled with Jumapam.
Bruno Torres insisted that the mayor call the governor to address their housing needs. Palacios explained that she would manage the request, but the decision on when to come would be made by the governor. The representatives continued to demand, “speak to the governor, to your godfather,” to which she responded, “he is not my godfather.”
As the issue was deemed exhausted, the mayor intended to address the mother of a missing young man. She moved towards the presidency, but representatives of the displaced followed her, with some breaking into the office. The rest of the group left the council room to blockade again, trapping tourist buses.
