According to official figures from the Guanajuato Secretariat of Security and Peace obtained via an access to information request by Milenio, in the last six-year period there were a total of 2,217 members of the Public Security Forces of the State of Guanajuato (FSPE) who resigned.
This was in the period from 2018 to December 2024. Of this total, the figures indicate that in 1,584 cases the resignation was due to the voluntary resignation of the member, that is, in 72 percent.
For various reasons, state police officers chose to leave the corporation, despite the fact that Guanajuato has the best salaries in the country, with a base salary of 25 thousand pesos per month, plus benefits, scholarships for their children and life insurance.
Regarding resignations, it is reported that in 2018 there were 82; In 2019, there were 306 resignations, in 2020 there were a total of 196, in 2021 there were 253, while the following year there was an increase, reaching 271 in 2022.
The year 2023 broke the record with 310 resignations, the highest figure of the six-year term, and from January to November 2024, 166 resigned.
On the other hand, the cases where the resignation occurred due to the fact that the element died in the line of duty are the least, with 82 deaths; this represents 4 percent of the casualties.
Regarding deaths, it is noteworthy that seven deaths have occurred so far in December 2024, which is set to become one of the most violent for the elements, whose work is becoming increasingly complex due to the use of large-caliber weapons, armor and even explosive devices by organized crime groups.
The most recent attack was recorded on December 16 in the municipality of Uriangato, where the State Forces faced a commando with large-caliber weapons; four elements were killed and two more were seriously injured.
Faced with what local authorities have called “an unequal fight,” the governor, Libia Dennise García, has publicly stated that they will request the corresponding permits from the Sedena so that the State Public Security Forces in Guanajuato can carry firearms.
