A shortage of sandwichón bread has been reported in Mérida just days before Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, causing concern among Yucatecan families who traditionally serve this dish during the holidays.
The increased demand for sandwichón bread has made it difficult to find, with bakeries seeing their shelves empty as long lines of people arrive to buy the sought-after bread. As Christmas approaches, fewer packages are available.
In some well-known bakeries, lines form as early as 3 a.m., and the bread sells out within minutes. Despite the high demand, bakery managers assure that they will continue preparing bread throughout the week.
Resellers of sandwichón bread have also emerged on social media. On December 22, users noted that local bakeries and some supermarkets still had the bread in stock.
Yucatecan internet users encouraged buying from local bakeries, with one comment stating, “Local bakeries are taking orders. Let’s buy from the bakeries in our neighborhoods.”
