Museums in Jalisco, a great option to visit during this vacation

The Jalisco Ministry of Culture and the OPD of Museums, Exhibitions and Galleries of Jalisco invite you to enjoy their many options this holiday season, as the cultural and artistic venues will be open to the public. With options ranging from art and history in Guadalajara to the richness of traditional ceramics in Tlaquepaque, passing through the archaeological wonders of Teuchitlán, there is a wide cultural offering to enjoy with the whole family. In addition, some of the options have temporary exhibitions that allow you to rediscover regional art and history.

The only exception is that museums and galleries will be closed on December 24, 25 and 31, as well as January 1, 2025. These are the open places and hours from December 26 to January 5: In Zapopan, the JAPI Museum (Jalisco Interactive Walk) is ideal for the whole family, as its activities are designed to make science accessible and fun for all audiences.

JAPI offers its visitors 90 exhibits designed to offer both educational and entertaining experiences. The thematic axes through which the exhibits are designed are Person, Creativity, Nature and Identity. JAPI will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 29 and from January 2 to 5 with hours from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday; and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The general cost is 150 pesos and it is located at Avenida Central Guillermo González Camarena #750. In Guadalajara, the Ex Convento del Carmen has five exhibition halls and the Mariano Azuela Bookstore. It is currently exhibiting the exhibition “Lumbre, Ilustradoras en México.” It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 29 and from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5, with hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is located at Avenida Juárez #638, in Guadalajara. The Government Palace of Jalisco is also one of the most emblematic cultural spaces in the city, standing out for its impressive collection of murals and its varied exhibition hall.

One of the main attractions are its murals, the work of painter José Clemente Orozco, one of the greatest exponents of Mexican muralism. In addition, the Government Palace Museum has a temporary exhibition hall. It currently exhibits the Exposition of Prominent Women of Jalisco and the Informative Exhibition in collaboration with El Colegio de Jalisco.

It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 28 and from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5 with hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is located at Corona #31, Centro Histórico, in Guadalajara. In Tlaquepaque there is the Regional Museum of Ceramics, which brings together a selection of crafts dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The pieces that make up the collection were created by renowned artisans from the region using various techniques, including burnished clay, high temperature clay, flag clay and petatillo, among others.

At the Guachimontones “Phil Weigand” Interpretive Center, in the municipality of Teuchitlán, visitors can learn more about the Guachimontones archaeological site, famous for its circular structure of pyramids or “mounds,” a unique design not found in any other pre-Hispanic site in Mesoamerica. It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 29 and from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5, with hours from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The entrance fee is 30 pesos. It is located at Camino al Sitio Arqueológico Guachimontones s/n, Teuchitlán. The José de Jesús González Gallo Cultural Center, located in the Old Chapala Railroad Station, offers various cultural and artistic events, thus enriching the cultural offering of the region.

It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 29 and from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5, with hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, it will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is located at González Gallo Avenue #1500, Chapala. Another option within the state is the Regional Cultural Center “La Moreña”, which is located in the municipality of La Barca. One of the most notable aspects of the farm is the set of twelve murals painted between 1857 and 1861 by the renowned Jalisco artist Gerardo Suárez.

The museum has three rooms with 19th-century furniture and décor, a temporary exhibition room, and the archive of the master José Luis Razo Zaragoza, who specializes in the history of La Barca. In Zapotlán el Grande, the Casa Taller Literario Juan José Arreola is a space that was the home of the Jalisco writer. It has two permanent exhibition rooms in which the author’s personal objects are displayed and his life and work are explained. It also has a library and an auditorium where artistic and cultural activities are scheduled, including the Arreolino Colloquium, where workshops and conferences, plays, public readings and chess sessions are held as a tribute to Arreola.

It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Saturday, December 28 and from Thursday, January 2 to Saturday, January 4, with hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is located at Prolongación Pedro Moreno s/n, Col. Lomas de Barro, Zapotlán el Grande. The Museum and Regional Center of the Arts is located in Autlán de Navarro. It is currently an important cultural reference for the Costa Sur and Sierra de Amula Region of Jalisco.

The museum has several permanent exhibition halls with works of sacred art, traditions and customs from the beginning of the 20th century, furniture, objects and clothing, as well as a space dedicated to the musician Carlos Santana, another to the artist José Atanasio Monroy and another to the musicians of Autlán and the region. It will be open from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 December and from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 January with hours from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is located at Morelos #47, Autlán de Navarro.

The agave landscape, a World Heritage Site, has the Interpretive Museum of the Agave Landscape and Mining in the municipality of Magdalena, a space with information about the sites established since pre-Hispanic times for the use of black obsidian, abundant on the slopes of the Tequila volcano, as well as the exploitation of opal. In the archaeology room there are references to the tradition of shaft tombs and the Huitzilapa tomb located in this region. In addition, some pre-Hispanic pieces and replicas are exhibited that show the use and consumption of agave in pre-Hispanic times.

The Mining rooms show the mining tradition, the tools and the uses of these natural resources transformed by artisans of the region. The Agave Landscape room shows field objects, containers, documents and maps of the Magdalena area within the Agave Landscape. It will be open from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 December and from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 January with hours from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 hours.

It is located at Hidalgo #43, Magdalena, Jalisco. In Zapopan, the recently opened Tequila Lab Museum offers its visitors an immersive experience that covers the history, production processes and cultural richness surrounding this emblematic Mexican drink.

Through dynamic exhibits, audiovisual projections and sensory activities, Tequila Lab invites visitors to discover the secrets of agave and the magic behind its transformation into tequila. It will be open from Thursday, December 26 to Sunday, December 29 and from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is located at Avenida Central Guillermo González Camarena 750, in Zapopan.
