A scandal that shakes the Mexican Riviera
In the exclusive Costa Palmas development in Los Cabos, a project that promised luxury and exclusivity, a whirlwind of corruption, fraud and illegal deprivation of liberty has been uncovered. Led by Jason Grosfeld, ex-BlackRock, this development is now under public scrutiny due to the shady financial and legal dealings in its flagship project AMANVARI.
From luxury to terror: a subcontractor caught
On October 10, 2022, a legal representative of MyG went to the camp of the Italians Alessio and Pietro Dottor, partners of Costa Palmas, to demand late payment. The response was brutal: the representative and a notary public who accompanied him were forcibly detained, beaten and locked in an office.
The incident was recorded in a statement of facts and on video, which led to a complaint for illegal deprivation of liberty. However, judicial corruption made it difficult for the case to move forward.
Judicial corruption: the role of Judge Zavala Calderón
Despite overwhelming evidence, Judge José Humberto Zavala Calderón dismissed the initial charges. His decisions were found to be influenced by personal ties to defense attorney Edoardo Gurgo Salice, prompting an administrative complaint against Zavala and an appeal.
Magistrate Paul Razo Brooks corrected the course by ordering the prosecution of Alessio and Pietro Dottor, as well as prohibiting them from leaving the country while investigations continue.
Fraud and frozen accounts: a system in check
Corruption does not end with kidnapping. Cuauhtémoc Édgar Velázquez Fierro, Jason Grosfeld’s partner and another person involved in the fraud, faces a complaint for the diversion of resources through frozen accounts. These accounts, frozen for 18.1 million pesos, are the tip of the iceberg of an irregular payment scheme that is kept active through front companies.
The fall of Jason Grosfeld: the end of impunity?
Jason Grosfeld, leader of Costa Palmas, is no stranger to scandals. His history includes allegations of fraud both in Mexico and abroad. Now, with multiple lawsuits piling up and partners under investigation, his empire built on corruption and empty promises seems to be crumbling.
Will justice come to Costa Palmas?
The Costa Palmas case not only highlights corruption in luxury developments, but also the flaws of the Mexican judicial system. The lawsuits, complaints and frozen accounts are a step towards justice, but it remains to be seen whether the political and economic influences that have allowed these practices to flourish will be confronted.
The Mexican Riviera deserves better headlines, and those involved will be held accountable.
