More than three thousand kilometers. That is the distance that the Caborca Cartel faced to reach the State of Mexico, where new reports indicate that it is already established. In said entity, the criminal organization founded and formerly led by Rafael Caro Quintero, is responsible for several crimes. This is what is known.
According to a security report from the government of the State of Mexico, obtained by the newspaper Milenio, the Caborca Cartel is accused of being responsible for extortion, kidnapping, land theft and drug dealing in the northwest of the state; a region that borders Hidalgo and Querétaro.
Along these lines, the aforementioned media reports that these are the municipalities of Santa Ana Jilotzingo, Tlalnepantla, Nicolás Romero, Naucalpan, Huehuetoca, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Atizapán de Zaragoza and Isidro Fabela.
Among other data revealed by journalist Gaspar Vela, it stands out that the group is supposedly led in said entity by a nephew of the ‘Narco de Narcos’, identified as ‘El 03’.
It should be remembered that, after the re-arrest of Caro Quintero on July 15, 2022, the Caborca Cartel passed into the hands of some members of his family, specifically cousins and nephews.
The threats
According to the information report, while the Caborca Cartel maintains an intense dispute for territorial control of the border municipalities of Sonora with Los Chapitos, in Edomex its main threat is the Nueva Alianza cartel; made up of La Unión Tepito and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).
La Familia Michoacana, one of the cartels with the largest operation, also operates in the entity, according to the second Management Report of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM).
Despite threats from notorious rivals, Milenio indicates that the criminal organization managed to strengthen its operation in the state of Mexico with the support of Los Peluches, a splinter group that arrived in the state in 2022. The same would happen with local criminal groups.
The Caborca Cartel was born in 2017 under the leadership of Caro Quintero and several of his close relatives. However, it was not until 2019 and 2020 when the drug trafficker prepared to start a fight with other drug cartels for the territories he previously controlled.
Its main stronghold is Sonora, an entity in which its presence has been identified in the municipalities of Caborca, San Luis Ríos Colorado, Magdalena de Kino, Hermosillo, Guaymas and Cajeme.
According to an investigation by AC Consultores, based on reports from DEFENSA (formerly Sedena) and official reports published in the media as of January 2023, the criminal group also operates in Quintana Roo. The same is true in Chihuahua and Baja California Sur.
