The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Mexico (FGR) reports that it is investigating the mayor and authorities of the municipality of Coalcomán, Michoacán, after a video went viral showing them giving gifts to the population, allegedly sent by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, leader of the New Generation Cartel (CNG) and who is wanted by the United States government.

The FGR opened an investigation file against Anavel Ávila Castrejón, mayor of Calcomán, who, along with her collaborators and residents of the municipality, publicly thanked the gifts that “El Mencho” apparently sent them, at a Christmas party held in recent days in the main square of the town.

The investigation specifies that the mayor allowed a banner to be placed in the square, a few meters from the municipal presidency.

The investigation also includes the trustees (city officials) Cain Salvador Sanchez Mendoza and Mauricio Godinez Madrigal, as well as the director of the Municipal Police, Rafael Vargas Reyna, who guarded the event, together with agents of the Civil Guard.

As well as the councilors Jairo Avila Cervantes, Vicente Gonzalez Barahona, Urania Velen Ramos Casares, Arely Lopez Figueroa, Uriel Orozco Arredondo, Francisco Javier Andrade Barajas, Sarai Mora Guizar, Patricia Chavez Mendoza, Jose Rafael Lopez Ixtas, Jesus Blanco Barajas, Jessica Sanchez Abarca and Paola Nereyda Guizar Zepeda.

In addition, the FGR is investigating three operators of “El Mencho”, a drug trafficker of Michoacan origin and for whom the United States government offers a reward of 15 million dollars for his capture.

For his part, the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, demanded that Ávila Castrejón resign from his post, and urged the Attorney General’s Office to “thoroughly investigate the municipal authorities of Coalcomán for their probable connection with a criminal group.”

In a brief statement, Ávila Castrejón distanced himself from the accusations against him, and assured that he has been “vigilant that the law is followed and under no circumstances would he participate in any situation of apology for crime.”

Coalcomán is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur, between the borders of Michoacán and Jalisco, where the CNG maintains a strong fight against the Tepalcatepec Cartel, headed by Juan José Farías Álvarez, alias “El Abuelo,” a former partner of “El Mencho” who in 2013 organized, financed and infiltrated the civilian self-defense groups.
