In order to prevent the population from being victims of extortion and telephone fraud, C5 Jalisco issues a series of recommendations for the December period, which is when the greatest number of calls, links and voice audios are recorded to deceive, intimidate and scare whoever answers the phone or mobile device.
In the period from December 1 to 16, 2024, 515 calls were received to 089 Anonymous Complaint, which resulted in appropriate registrations as complaints.
How do extortionists operate?
The way they operate is through threatening calls in which they presume to cause physical harm or death; scams in the delivery of goods; the application of virtual kidnappings; false raffles; as well as the collection of alleged debts and floor rights.
If you answer the call and detect an extortion attempt, you should hang up immediately. It is important to remain calm and call 089 Anonymous Report or the Single Emergency Number 911.
Fraud is also reported through emails and SMS messages with links that steal information from cell phones or computers.
Citizens of Guadalajara and Zapopan were those who reported the highest number of complaints for fraud and/or telephone extortion, totaling 123 and 107 respectively, during the aforementioned period.
What to do in case of extortion?
Currently, Artificial Intelligence is used by criminals to clone the voice of a person whose cell phone number they hack and then send voice messages created with this technology in which an emergency situation is exposed and a bank transaction is requested.
For the above, C5 Jalisco recommends not sharing information with unknown people, avoid answering calls from numbers you do not recognize and not accessing links to suspicious pages or ads.
Once the authorities are informed, they will follow up on these reports and, if necessary, may request the telephone company to cancel the fraudulent line.
Both 089 and 911 are available to the population 24 hours a day, all year round.
To file the complaint corresponding to 089 Anonymous Complaint, it is important to take into account that personal data will not be requested and it is essential to have the telephone number(s) of the extortionists or the links, time and date of calls or messages.
You should also describe what they said to you at the time of making the communication, provide information about the bank account given by the extortionist, and if you have made a deposit, share the information.
Once the report has been made, the operator will generate a complaint so that the corresponding authority can proceed with the investigation.
If you require any assistance from a security corporation, it is recommended to call 9-1-1 and they will go to the address.
In this sense, the operator will request information such as name and address, as well as the telephone number(s) from which the extortion call(s) were received, as well as the bank account information given by the extortionist.
Once the report has been made, in both cases, you will be invited to file a complaint with the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office.
