During her appearance, Sheinbaum stated that “an investigation is being carried out on the municipal president, whether or not she has ties to this criminal group.”
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that the alleged connection of Anabel Ávila Castrejón, mayor of Coalcomán, Michoacán, with the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) is being investigated.
The controversy arose on December 10, when, at a public event, Ávila Castrejón thanked Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho’, leader of the CJNG, for donating toys for the children of the community.
During the event, a banner was displayed that said: “The children of Coalcomán thank Mr. Nemesio Oseguera and his children 2 and 3, Delta 1, for their noble gesture. Thank you for your gifts.”
Sheinbaum condemned the use of criminal apology in public events and called on society not to be carried away by messages that glorify criminals. “There were television series that made an apology for these groups as if getting close to them meant a life of luxury and money. In reality, it is a perspective of death,” the president emphasized.
The president also highlighted the importance of directing efforts towards addressing the causes that lead to violence and crime. “The objective should be for Mexicans to have access to food, health, housing and education, not to the accumulation of resources or consumerism, which does not bring happiness,” she said.
Likewise, Sheinbaum announced that her administration will launch an awareness campaign next year on the risks of drug use, particularly among young people. “It is up to us to continue promoting the security policy that addresses the causes,” she added, stressing the need to offer education, employment and values that keep the new generations away from destructive options.
Finally, regarding the investigation into Ávila Castrejón, the president preferred not to speculate, trusting that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will provide the necessary information once the details of the case are known.
