A dramatic collision between a trailer and a fuel tanker on the Escárcega-Champotón highway in Campeche was captured on video by a third driver. The footage has quickly gone viral on social media.
The accident occurred on January 2 at around 2:00 PM, causing severe material damage and significant traffic disruptions due to a spectacular explosion.
Head-On Collision and Explosion
Preliminary reports indicate that the trailers collided head-on. The widely shared video shows the exact moment of the impact. Both vehicles were severely damaged, blocking both directions of the road near the ejidos Vicente Guerrero and Xbacab.
The collision caused a strong explosion, which is visible in the video. The third driver, who recorded the incident, managed to escape unharmed but lost control of his vehicle and ended up on the side of the road. He left his unit, collected his belongings and documents, and waited for rescue teams.
Driver’s Recklessness Revealed
Authorities have reviewed the video and determined that one of the trailers overtook a car recklessly, contributing to the crash along with excessive speed. The investigation also revealed that one of the trailers was carrying a significant load of fuel, leading to the explosion. Both drivers died at the scene, with one being burned in the fire.
Members of the National Guard’s road division, along with Civil Protection of Champotón, worked to extinguish the flames. The Red Cross and municipal police of Champotón supported the rescue and care efforts for the injured and the driver who recorded the event.
