Although it was a great benefit factor for the holiday season at the end of the year for the port of Acapulco, the free toll on the Autopista del Sol must be an issue that must be analyzed in depth by the authorities.

Acapulco businessmen indicated that not spending money on tolls to travel on the Autopista del Sol gives a considerable opportunity to travel to this beach destination, however, the cost benefit must be analyzed and evaluated as well as the situation of the concessions that are held.

“Definitely the free toll road was a great factor for the holiday season, because many people came from other cities near the port, such as Mexico, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Morelos, it represents an economic saving in toll payments, but it is also a fact that the toll road must be constantly rehabilitated,” said the restaurant entrepreneur Fernando Reina Iglesias.

He acknowledged that currently the economy of Mexican families is not the best and anything that one can save to later allocate it to goods and pleasures such as vacations helps a lot.

Since September 2024 after the passage of Hurricane John, the Autopista del Sol was opened to free circulation as part of the support actions by the federal government in the face of the damage left by the natural phenomenon in the port. A little more than three months later the road remains unpaid at three toll booths, La Venta, Palo Blanco and Paso Morelos.

For his part, the businessman in the hotel industry of Acapulco, Octavio Segura Pintos, stated that the port does require this type of benefits that were reflected in this holiday season last December, however he said that the free toll has to be weighed.

“It is good to have free access, but it is also necessary to analyze and this is the responsibility of the government authorities, for businessmen and Acapulqueños not paying the toll booths, it is healthy and good because it generates an influx of visitors due to the savings of more than 1,600 pesos that it represents to come to the port and return the tourists to their cities of origin,” he said.

He added that the Autopista del Sol is the main communication route to reach the port of Acapulco, and therefore represents the entry of just over 85 percent of the total tourism that decides to come to enjoy the beaches of the port.
