The Guadalajara Metropolitan Area closed 2024 with poor air quality: 7 out of 10 days recorded air pollution levels above the official Mexican standards, which poses health risks to the population exposed to constantly dirty air.
According to data provided by the Mide Jalisco system, as of October 31, 2024, only 117 days out of the 300 elapsed recorded air of acceptable quality, that is, between good and regular.
This means that not only is there pollution outside the norm when pre-contingencies or atmospheric contingencies are activated, but that from 100 imecas recorded at a monitoring station
there is already a concentration of pollutants dangerous to public health.
In just seven days of the year, the Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development has already activated 11 pre-contingencies and 4 atmospheric contingencies with a maximum level of 183 IMECA reached on January 1; three times as many episodes of poor air quality compared to the same period last year.
In addition, 2024 closed with 68 episodes of poor air quality, that is, pre-contingencies and contingencies, while in 2023 there were 56 episodes.
The poor air quality in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area is contributed by both fixed and vehicular sources. According to the Imeplan emissions viewer, Zapopan and Guadalajara are the municipalities of the city that
mostly contribute particulate matter and polluting gases, such as PM10, PM2.5, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.
The document also states that the main sources of pollution are cars, motorcycles, cargo vehicles, brick factories, industries, businesses, fires, among others.
