On Sunday, January 5, 2024, in various parts of the state of Nuevo León (NL), tables were set up to collect signatures to promote an initiative that seeks the independence of the state for the creation of a new country. This is what businessman Gilberto Lozano González is seeking, who has promoted the initiative since the end of 2024.
Through his social networks, the character who became the leader of the National Anti-AMLO Front (FRENAA) and assumes himself as “pro-family, pro-life and anti-socialist” has promoted the collection of signatures to present the intention of the consultation before the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Nuevo León (IEEPCNL), an organization that gave its approval after receiving the notice from Lozano.
In this regard, he announced that on January 5, 2024, 10 citizen support registration tables were active, in which the collection of signatures requested by the State Electoral Institute was sought to give rise to the next step of the procedure stipulated for citizen consultations.
Although the businessman has announced that it consists of a “consultation approved by the INE”, it is a misleading announcement. And the fact is that the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Nuevo León (IEEPCNL) only accepted the notice of intention to consult and endorsed the electronic format for the collection of signatures of citizen support. In this sense, the result of the action carried out on January 5 does not imply a definitive result in any way.
In order for his project to continue with the institutional route, the businessman has to obtain the signatures of at least two percent of the people registered in the electoral roll. In this sense, he has to get the support of at least 89,691 people before July 31, 2025, the deadline for collecting signatures established by the authorities.
As he has announced in various spaces and media, the right-wing businessman has promoted the project for the independence of Nuevo León due to his dissatisfaction with the administration of the government headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and, now, by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
In case of approval of the project, it would have to undergo a series of reviews to determine its legality, viability, as well as impartiality of the question. However, the independence of the state of Nuevo León is unconstitutional since the second article of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States (CPEUM) establishes that:
“The Mexican Nation is unique and indivisible, based on the greatness of its peoples and cultures.”
