Social classes in Mexico are defined by deep economic inequalities that generate a stratified social structure.

The division is made into three large groups: the upper class, the middle class and the lower class. Due to their differences, the permanence in each of these classes will define the level of accessibility to resources, basic services, education and formal employment of people. Added to these differences is the disparity in income between urban and rural areas.

Thus, the characteristics of social classes are not defined solely by the level of income, they are also influenced by other factors that widen the gap even further.

According to official figures, in Mexico the majority of the population belongs to the lower class, while only a minority reaches the upper class.

How much should you earn to be lower class in Mexico?

Families that fall within this classification receive an average monthly income of 11,343 pesos. According to the data, 65% of the population in Mexico lives in lower-class homes, places where the struggle to meet the most basic needs such as food and access to health services is the bread and butter.

The states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Guerrero and Yucatan are the ones with the largest concentration of the lower-class population.

How much should you earn to be middle class in Mexico?

The middle class in Mexico has a wide variety of socioeconomic characteristics determined by the specific context in which individuals develop. For this reason, to better understand and delimit these differences, the middle class is divided into strata.

Figures indicate that more than 30% of the population in Mexico belongs to this category. The main strata into which it is divided are:

Lower Middle Class (Stratum D+)

This is made up of about 20% of the population, who generally work as office workers, technicians or supervisors. Their average monthly income is 12,300 pesos.

Upper Middle Class (Strata C):
