Morante’s festivities in La Puebla, between a painter and a poet: “We are privileged to be able to enjoy his bullfighting for another season”

This week, Morante de la Puebla presented the San Sebastián festivities, which are his own, extended to two dates – 18 and 19 January – with their respective bull runs and bullfights without picadors. He did so alongside the mayor of La Puebla del Río, María Dolores Prósper, but in reality it was as if he did so between the painter José Tomás Pérez Indiano, author of the poster, and the poet, Rafael Peralta Revuelta, who will give the opening speech. The event, by the way, will have the important novelty of the presence of the Canal Sur cameras.

For Pérez Indiano, who is repeating the assignment, it is a privilege that allows him to recreate “that strength and that idiosyncrasy that the bull runs of La Puebla del Río possess and the way its people live it.” The work, with Morante as its epicentre, is inspired “by the old film posters from the 40s, being an open window of the scene to the spectator. Where the axis that structures it are the three assets, for me, that make it unique. San Sebastián, Morante de la Puebla and the bull. From there the scene develops, with very personal motives for the cigar makers.”

Peralta Revuelta feels filled with satisfaction because his roots are sunk in that enclave whose name is already at the top of the history of bullfighting with Morante: “It is an immense pride due to the deep relationship that the Peralta family has had and has with our land throughout generations. Our roots are there, and the life of my father, my uncle Ángel and our family cannot be understood without La Puebla del Río. Therefore, that they have remembered me to open and exalt the San Sebastián bull runs in this edition of 2025 is an enormous satisfaction and an honour that I carry in my heart.”

The painter who is inspired by Ruano Llopis, and feels Botero and Barceló as references, knows the importance of this commission because of the projection that the San Sebastián event has gained, “because of the number of places and people that the poster reaches.” Indiano has exhibitions planned in Madrid and Paris, where he will bring “two new collections that are different from each other.”

Peralta, for his part, wants to give a poetic approach to his speech, “including passages that evoke emotions and enrich the speech with that more artistic vision that also defines La Puebla del Río. My idea is to make a journey that combines personal experiences with the history of the San Sebastián festivities, highlighting those traditions that define us as a town.”

Both know the importance of the figure of Morante, but the poet, who is more than a poet, says it very well: “His great afternoons, the depth of his bullfighting, his enormous capacity make him a unique artist, who still has no ceiling (almost 30 years after the alternative). His art, his creativity and his dimension as a bullfighter are infinite. We bullfighting fans are privileged to be able to continue contemplating his bullfighting for another season. He is one of the most important names in the history of bullfighting.”
