Tosepan: The community that said NO to Walmart, mining companies, and hydroelectric plants.

The Tosepan cooperative in Puebla is a union of indigenous communities that has built its strength by rejecting corporate projects such as Walmart, mining concessions, and hydroelectric plants. Since its founding in 1977, it has brought together Nahua and Tutunakú peoples under the principle “Tosepan Titataniske,” which means “United We Will Succeed.”

Their resistance is not only about rejecting external exploitation but also about creating a different way of living. They promote a solidarity-based economy that prioritizes collective well-being, protect forests and rivers from extractive activities, and strengthen community autonomy through cooperative structures.

Guided by the indigenous philosophy of Buen Vivir (Yeknemilis), they seek harmony with nature and dignity in everyday life. More recently, they have advanced projects focused on energy sovereignty, aiming to develop renewable energy managed by the community itself and free from corporate dependence.

In this way, Tosepan represents both a defense of territory and a living alternative that inspires movements around the world.
