In November 2024, Mexico reported a 20.3% increase in international tourists, according to data from Inegi’s International Traveler Surveys (EVI). During this period, the country received 7 million 607 thousand 453 foreign visitors, of which 3 million 943 thousand 297 were international tourists, representing 51.8% of the total.
Increase in international tourism
Compared to November 2023, the number of international tourists grew by 13.2%. Highlighting that 84.4% of these arrived by air, an increase of 0.9% at an annual rate.
On the other hand, land tourism also showed an increase, with 356 thousand 998 tourists. 8.7% more than in the same month last year.
In the case of border tourists, who enter by car or on foot, there was an increase of 33.3%, reaching 1,654,413 visitors in November 2024.
What are the most visited cities?
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that in the first 11 months of the year, the arrival of 19 million 917 thousand foreign tourists by air to Mexico was recorded according to their nationality. An increase of 2.2%, compared to the same period in 2023, and 16.6% more than arrivals in 2019.
According to information from the Migration Policy Unit-Registration and Identity of Persons of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), the head of the Ministry of Tourism added that the main countries in arrivals of foreign tourists by air to Mexico, in January-November 2024, were the United States, Canada and Colombia with 15 million 497 thousand tourists together, 4.2% more than in 2023.
Rodríguez Zamora said that in the first 11 months of the year the airports of:
Cancún
Mexico City
Los Cabos
Were the ones that received the highest number of foreign tourists, registering 14 million 620 thousand tourists.
Tourism revenue: more than 2.7 billion dollars
Foreign currency income from total visitor spending amounted to 2,754.9 million dollars, which represented an increase of 11.0% compared to the same month in 2023.
Specifically, international tourist spending was 2,522.1 million dollars. 93.3% came from inbound tourists and the remaining 6.7% from border tourists.
Average spending per visitor
The average spending per visitor in November 2024 was 362.13 dollars, 7.7% less than the average recorded in the same month of the previous year.
Inbound tourists: 1,027.88 dollars.
By air: 1,158.64 dollars.
By land: 320.28 dollars.
Border tourists: 102.42 dollars.
Departures of national residents
In the same period, a 43.8% increase was reported in Mexican residents who went abroad, spending a total of 1,129.9 million dollars, 31.9% more than in November 2023. Of this amount, 780.5 million dollars corresponded to in-patient tourists and the rest to border tourists. The average expenditure per national resident was 165.51 dollars, distributed as follows:
In-patient tourists: 615.28 dollars.
Border tourists: 72.40 dollars.
