A Mexican tourist has taken to social media to denounce a taxi driver at Cancun International Airport who attempted to charge him 1,800 pesos for a nine-minute trip. The tourist, identified as Roberto Hermilo, shared his experience in a video on his TikTok account (@roberto.hermilo).
Hermilo compared the exorbitant fare to the rates he paid in Europe, where long-distance taxi rides cost between 500 and 600 pesos. He expressed his frustration, stating, “I’m arriving in Mexico, my country, being Mexican, having a price and discount as a Mexican. Here I came only for a connection, so I have my hotel nine minutes from the airport and the taxi charges me 1,800 pesos. It’s a robbery, it’s a scam!”
He also criticized the “taxi mafia” in Cancun for preventing ride-sharing services like Uber from operating at the airport. In a follow-up video, Hermilo mentioned that he eventually reached his hotel by hiring a transport company for 400 pesos, while the same trip on Uber the next day was priced at 150 pesos.
Hermilo clarified that he did not blame the taxi drivers, as they were following the price list provided to them. Following the video’s release, many internet users expressed their outrage and recommended alternative transportation options, such as ADO buses.
This incident is not isolated. Other tourists have reported excessive charges by Cancun taxi drivers. Influencers and content creators, including Luisito Comunica, have also voiced their dissatisfaction with taxi fares in Cancun. In response, Cristina Torres Gómez, head of the Quintana Roo Government Secretariat, announced measures to regulate taxi fares at the state’s airports.
