The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Campeche has issued a search notice for two young Chinese tourists, Zhou Mengqin (21) and Yugui Weng (27), who disappeared while traveling to Playa del Carmen. The investigation is escalating to a national alert to expedite their discovery.
According to the Attorney General’s report, the tourists’ families were aware of their arrival in San Francisco de Campeche on December 28. The pair planned to continue their journey to Playa del Carmen to meet a relative. However, they have not been heard from since their last communication, which indicated they were en route to Playa del Carmen.
An unofficial source revealed that an initial search notice issued by the Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office lacked sufficient data to identify the tourists. The request for collaboration has now reached Campeche’s justice administration agency. The relative in Playa del Carmen, the young man’s father, notified the State Search Commission after losing contact with them.
Authorities plan to interview the family, but the lack of a Chinese-Spanish translator in Campeche has hindered obtaining potential clues. The Prosecutor’s Office is expected to contact an external interpreter soon to proceed with the information gathering.
In December, the United States Department of State issued travel alerts for 30 of Mexico’s 32 federal entities due to violence and insecurity. The alerts advise against travel to six states: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Other states, including Quintana Roo, are flagged for extreme precautions due to crime and kidnappings.
