Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente said that the programs of the Mexican Agency for Cooperation and Development (Amexcid) will be expanded in the countries where they are already operating as a measure to prevent migration.

“Under instructions from President Sheinbaum, the programs of our Mexican Agency for Cooperation and Development, Amexcid, will be expanded in the countries where they are already operating, and we will also try to increase other spaces in which we can promote them,” said De la Fuente during the meeting on Human Mobility on the Northern Route of the Continent, in which representatives from Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Venezuela and Honduras participated.

“These are concrete programs that, in practice, show their benefits and that we hope can also be the reason for new contributions that are required so that programs of that nature, if they are not exactly the same, which they should not be, but inspired by the models that have already proven to work, can be developed in other spaces,” added the foreign minister.

“It is essential to address the causes of migration, and cooperation for development is an essential component of our comprehensive strategy. For this reason, we are strengthening the programs Sembrando Vida and Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro as effective tools to reduce the intention to migrate,” Amexcid published on its X account.

Humanitarian model as a reference

In addition, Foreign Minister De la Fuente presented Mexico’s humanitarian model of human mobility as a key tool that prioritizes respect for human rights and the dignity of migrants.

He stressed that this approach not only allows for more effective management of migration, but also serves as a reference for other countries in the region.

“We are consolidating a model that fundamentally reflects the humanitarian sense of our way of understanding and addressing this extraordinarily complex phenomenon,” said the Foreign Minister.

The foreign minister warned of possible changes in the migration policies of the United States, one of the main destinations for migratory flows in the hemisphere, and stressed the importance of the countries of the region being prepared to face the new challenges together.

“We must complement each other and enhance our capacities in a synergistic way to face the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.

De la Fuente reiterated the importance of adhering to international law to guarantee the dignity and rights of migrants, regardless of their status. He also highlighted the growing commitment of the countries of the region to collaborate and coordinate efforts in the management of the migration phenomenon.

The foreign minister proposed that the conclusions of the meeting be presented at the next CELAC meeting to enrich the regional debate and involve more countries in joint efforts. “This dialogue must continue and allow each nation to enrich its perspectives and actions in the face of this challenge,” he said.

In a message to migrants, De la Fuente said: “You are not alone. We are working in a coordinated and joint manner to support you, regardless of your immigration status,” he concluded.
