Figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) confirm that last year 30,057 murders and 829 femicides were committed in the country, an average of 84 victims per day.
This represents a 1% increase in homicidal violence compared to the 30,566 intentional homicides and femicides recorded in 2023.
The most violent six-year term in history
However, statistics show that during the six-year term of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, more than 30,000 murders were committed per year, making it the most violent period in recent history, both according to figures from the National Public Security System and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

INEGI’s homicide death report for 2024 is likely to exceed the 30,886 murders reported by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System in 2024, since the Institute bases its report on death certificates.
According to SESNSP data, 35,693 victims of wilful homicide and femicide were recorded in 2019; 35,545 in 2020, the year the Covid pandemic began.
In 2021, 34,380 were recorded; in 2022, 31,957; in 2023, 30,566 murders, and in 2024, 30,886 murders.
According to official figures, May is the most violent month of 2023, with 2,749 murders, followed by June with 2,747.
Guanajuato, the most violent state
In absolute numbers, Guanajuato again exceeded 3,000 murders in one year, becoming the most violent state in the country during the past year.
Followed by Baja California, 2,368 victims of intentional homicide; State of Mexico, 2,258; Chihuahua, 2,004; Jalisco, 1,084; Guerrero, 1,738; Nuevo León, 1,539, and Morelos, 1,521.

In contrast, Colima leads the list with seven victims of intentional homicide per 100 thousand inhabitants, followed by Sinaloa with a rate of 5; Morelos, 4, all states governed by the Morena party.
