As a result of 14 searches in buildings located in various parts of the city, a hundred criminals were arrested who were engaged in the sale of drugs, stolen vehicles and in possession of firearms, as well as 200 tons of auto parts, reported the Secretary of Public Security of the People, Oscar Aparicio Avendaño. Among those arrested is the leader of evangelicals, Manuel Collazo Gómez.

Manuel Collazo Gómez was a candidate for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) for the district of San Cristóbal de las Casas. “Manuel N, an arrest warrant was executed for (the crime) of attacks against peace. He is now at the disposition of the Judge who is requesting him,” announced the Prosecutor of Chiapas, Jorge Luis Llaven.

In 2002, the leader of evangelical groups expelled from San Juan Chamula was arrested by the then governor Pablo Salazar Mendiguchía for various crimes.

Llaven said that during the operation, a hundred vehicles and 120 motorcycles operated by the Tzotzil gang cells that maintained control of the city between 2015-2018, when the PVEM governed this city, were seized.

Among the hundred detainees, there are 16 alleged criminals who were caught red-handed, in possession of drugs, weapons and stolen vehicles.

In 1993, when the last mass expulsion of 500 indigenous people who left Catholicism to embrace Protestantism took place in San Juan Chamula, Collazo Gómez founded the Organization of Evangelical Peoples of the Highlands of Chiapas (Opeach), but in 2002, he was arrested and held in the Cerro Hueco prison, for the criminal case 03/15/02.

In 2023, Collazo Gómez sought the candidacy of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) for the federal deputyship for the district of San Cristóbal de las Casas.

The current Morena senator for Chiapas, Edith López Hernández, wife of Mario Collazo Gómez, is the sister-in-law of the religious leader who was arrested this Sunday.

The Chiapas Prosecutor reported that Manuel Collazo Gómez was placed at the disposition of a judge, who ordered his confinement in the El Amate prison.
