In the north of the municipality of Mulegé, the communities of Punta Abreojos and La Bocana are promoting the growth of marine crops such as abalone, oysters and scallops. With the aim of improving the production and marketing of these high-value products, the aim is to strengthen the presence of these crops in national and international markets.
In addition, commitments have been established between fishermen, cooperatives and authorities to resolve challenges in mollusk farming and expand production capacity in the region.
On what was his second day of a work tour in the north of the municipality of Mulegé, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío and the National Commissioner of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Alejandro Flores Nava, agreed to join forces to promote the cultivation of abalone, oysters and scallops in the communities of Punta Abreojos and La Bocana.
During his visit to the facilities where abalone is cultivated, the governor of South California stressed that the Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission is an ally that encourages hopes that the exploitation of this species, which is considered one of the highest value, will have better returns.
In this context, he pointed out that the marketing of the products obtained from the sea will be strengthened, seeking new international markets and a greater presence in the national and local markets.
For his part, the Commissioner of Aquaculture and Fisheries reiterated the coordination and work plans with which cooperatives in this region of the state conduct themselves, considering them an example that deserves to be supported by this agency.
In a meeting with fishermen and cooperative members of La Bocana, a commitment was made to seek new markets for the product, as well as to find alternatives to overcome the difficulties that have been faced for the development of the mollusk in the natural environment; for this, direct communication and frequent meetings will be maintained in order to carry out joint actions.
Some of the agreements reached with producers were to seek an interview with the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, to support the expansion or construction of an abalone laboratory in the Progreso cooperative in the same community, to increase the production capacity of abalone seed, oyster and scallop, as well as to arrange meetings with Financiera Rural to obtain financing and expand farm production from 10 to 50 tons of abalone.
