Every Monday is for chatting” from the Manuel José Othón House Museum, which has scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m., the talk “The haciendas and old San Luis” by Víctor Balbotín.

Balbotín, since 2015, has been invited to participate in conferences, exhibitions and virtual pages, where he shares the results of his research, as well as photographs of former haciendas.

The haciendas in the state of San Luis Potosí have high historical, architectural and economic relevance, particularly in the 19th century. These structures, especially in the Altiplano potosino and in the east of the state, were an essential part of agricultural and livestock development, standing out for their magnitude and complexity.

Unlike estancias or ranches, the haciendas had large houses, churches and factories, while the estancias had a similar but smaller structure, and the ranches consisted of settlements without the monumental infrastructure.

These infrastructures were crucial for the management of livestock, particularly sheep, whose wool was an important source of income in the 19th century. In addition, the production of mezcal, salt and other goods reinforced the regional economy. In the case of the haciendas in the east of the state, the use of dams instead of norias makes a difference in water management practices.

The talk will allow us to learn about and observe the ancient architectural landscapes of the state, providing a more comprehensive perspective on the structure and operation of the haciendas and their importance.
