Cancun, a popular tourist destination, continues to face issues with unregulated taxi fees at its international airport. Governor Mara Lezama is addressing this problem after two American travelers were charged an exorbitant $500 for a ride to Tulum.

In one incident, a young woman and her friend from the U.S. were charged $500 for a 74-mile taxi ride from Cancun International Airport to Tulum. The fare included an extra fee of 2,500 pesos for stopping at two convenience stores. The driver demanded cash upfront, citing a lack of internet access for card payments. The U.S. tourist felt intimidated by the situation.

Governor Lezama is now working with the federal government to improve Cancun’s image and regulate transportation fees at the airport. She emphasized that excessive charges harm the destination and its tourism industry. The governor is determined to resolve this issue and ensure fair treatment for all travelers.

In a similar case, a traveler named Luisito “C” was charged 2,000 pesos for a 20-minute ride from Cancun International Airport to the Cancun Hotel Zone. The traveler described the taxi system as a “mafia.” State Secretary Cristina Torres is investigating the incident and advocating for greater transparency and control in taxi service rates at all airports in Quintana Roo.
