The Second District Court of the Federal Judicial Branch (PFJ) in the State granted an injunction to a young indigenous woman ordering the translation into Zapotec of the Valley of Oaxaca of a summary of the State Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Gender Violence.
Carlos Morales Sánchez, president of Litigio Estratégico Indígena (LEI), reported that María Fernanda Hernández Morales promoted this legal recourse in response to the State Congress’s failure to translate the law into all indigenous languages and to disseminate the translations in indigenous communities.
The ruling indicates that the Secretariat of Interculturality, Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities of Oaxaca has the responsibility of carrying out programs, projects and actions for the rescue, conservation, strengthening and revitalization of the indigenous languages of the state, assisting in the edition, elaboration and dissemination of educational material in these languages.
Morales Sánchez stressed that the Secretariat of Interculturality must produce a summary for informational purposes of the most relevant aspects of the content of the norm in the Zapotec of the Valley of Oaxaca.
He added that the Secretariat of Women must “promote actions to contribute to preventing, addressing, sanctioning and eradicating gender violence in all its forms.”
The Secretariat of Interculturality must translate and disseminate the summary of the norm through texts, audiovisual and computer media.
