The port of Tampico was ranked tenth among the 91 urban areas of interest with the lowest perception of insecurity in their surroundings, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

In the National Survey of Urban Public Security (Ensu), published on January 23, 2025, it was reported that among the cities where residents feel safest are many in northern Mexico.

Urban areas of interest where the population feels safest

  • San Pedro Garza García, where only 14% of respondents reported feeling some degree of insecurity
  • Piedras Negras, with 18.7%
  • Benito Juárez, with 20.7%.

The city in southern Tamaulipas surpassed Mérida, considered one of the safest in the country, which came in eleventh place with 31.5% of perceived insecurity.

The survey revealed that in December 2024, in Tampico, 30.9% of the population aged 18 or older considered themselves unsafe when living in their city; this represents an increase in the percentage compared to December 2023, when it was 23.7%. Thus, the perception of insecurity advanced 7.2 percentage points.

How safe do Tamaulipas residents feel in their state?

The 2025 National Urban Public Safety Survey also reviews the opinions of citizens in the main cities of the state of Tamaulipas. For example, in Reynosa, the percentage of perceived insecurity is 73.8%, which represents a decrease compared to December 2023, when it was 77%, that is, a drop of 3.9 percentage points.

On the other hand, in the state capital, Ciudad Victoria, there was an increase in the perception of insecurity, going from 46.6% in 2023 to 56.8% in 2024, which is equivalent to an increase of 10.2 percentage points.

In Nuevo Laredo, the perception of insecurity was 50.2% in 2024, a figure higher than that of the previous period, which was 49.6%.

In Tampico, the upward trend in the perception of insecurity was observed since the end of 2024, when it rose from 20% in September to 30.9% in December.

68.9% of the population reported feeling unsafe at ATMs located on public roads. Other places perceived as risky were:

Tampico remains in the top ten of the safest cities in the country as 2025 begins, although it faces ongoing challenges to maintain that perception.
