During the last month of last year, 684 thousand jobs were lost in the formal and informal sectors in Mexico, after the 580 thousand created in October and November 2024, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Despite the above, the number of unemployed decreased by 147 thousand people at the end of last year to reach 1 million 478 thousand, with which the unemployment rate based on original figures was reduced from 2.6% of the Economically Active Population (EAP) in November to 2.4% in December.
This is due to the fact that 831 thousand people left the labor market, with which the Economically Active Population fell to 60.8 million, thus the participation rate decreased from 60.0% in November to 59.3% in the last month of the year.
In the informal sector, 954 thousand jobs were lost in the reference month, with which the informality rate reached 53.7% of the population with a job in the country.
While in the formal sector, 271 thousand jobs were generated, a figure that contrasts with the data from the IMSS that registered the elimination of 405 thousand jobs.
In this sense, it can be inferred that more jobs were created in other areas, such as federal and state workers, as well as in the army.
Agricultural sector loses 454 thousand jobs
The agricultural sector was where the most jobs were lost with the elimination of 454 thousand jobs, as well as 239 thousand fewer in industry and 79 thousand in services. On the contrary, 89 jobs were generated in unidentified sectors.
By specific activities, where the most jobs were closed was in restaurants and accommodation services with the loss of 570 thousand jobs in the last month of last year; followed by trade with 335 thousand; and social services with 132 thousand less.
On the other hand, the activities where the most jobs were generated during the reference period were: various services with the creation of 406 thousand jobs; transportation, communications, mail and storage with 283 thousand; as well as government and international organizations with 240 thousand more.
