The Animal Welfare Secretariat of the municipality of Querétaro plans to begin registering pets in the capital between March and April, through the placement of a subcutaneous chip that will allow their identification and location in case of loss, reported Lennyz Meléndez Chacón, head of the department.
“The issue of pet registration will be taken up again within the sterilization project. Chips will also be delivered and with these we will have the registry, which will be complemented with that of the College of Veterinarians of Small Species,” explained the official.
The chip, which is the size of a grain of rice, will be placed subcutaneously with a special syringe. It does not cause pain or discomfort to pets and will allow, with a reader, the registration number associated with the owner of the animal to be identified.
Meléndez Chacón explained that the process is still under analysis and that “I still don’t have a start date for the project, we are evaluating what has to happen, if it also has to go through the City Council and so on.” However, she confirmed that the initial objective is to register 15 thousand pets in a first stage.
The final goal of the program could be doubled, since it is expected to reach up to 30 thousand registrations, depending on the response of the citizens.
“The ideal would be to reach 30 thousand, but we will see how society responds to this project,” said the Secretary of Animal Welfare.
The pet registry is a project that was announced in the previous administration and that responds to reforms to the municipal regulations on animal welfare. The objective is to have mechanisms for identification and registration of companion animals, aligned with the State Law of Protection, Care and Animal Control.
According to data from the state Health Department, there are at least 300,000 dogs in the capital of Queretaro, so this program seeks to offer a viable technological method to facilitate their identification and care.
