500 days before the 2026 World Cup, Gabriela Cuevas, Mexico’s representative for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, spoke to TUDN about the plans and how the organization is going as a country.
The intention of the Mexican government is that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not only for the three host cities, but that it covers the entire country with an extraordinary plan.
“There is a very interesting program that the Ministry of Tourism has, which is to take the World Cup to the 177 Magical Towns or they are also working with different cities or municipalities that are raising their hands and saying ‘How do I join? The stadiums play an important role, the three host cities and it must be emphasized that they have worked to meet FIFA’s requirements.”
Likewise, the representative of the Mexican government spoke of other host cities that are applying to be bunkers for some teams for the tournament.
“Some other stadiums are getting ready to compete as training centers and that would allow other teams to come and prepare in our country, such as the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Coahuila, which offer good security, logistics and even altitude conditions. There is a lot of supply in every sense.”
A 2026 WORLD CUP FOR ALL OF MEXICO
Another plan is for the 2026 World Cup to be a celebration for all of Mexico, without any sector of Mexican society feeling relegated or omitted.
“This World Cup cannot be an elitist event, closed only to certain classes. Football is a community event. A ball can transform the dynamics of a generation at school. We have to take that to every corner, reach every neighborhood, colony and community in Mexico.”
