The Mexico-Guatemala border port was reopened on Saturday, February 1, after being closed for almost two years due to the wave of violence generated by criminal groups.
Authorities from Chiapas participated in the reopening, which took place in the border municipality of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc.
In recent years, the border port was the scene of violence between criminal groups fighting for control of the plaza in said municipality.
At the end of 2024, the state registered 1,426 homicides, of which 662 were intentional, in addition to 32 femicides, 21 kidnappings and 2,380 robberies, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.
The wave of violence caused the displacement of 107 people from the community of Tzanembolom, in the municipality of Chenalhó due to their involvement in the conflict between two antagonistic criminal groups.
In addition, in June 2024 there was a criminal attack perpetrated in the indigenous community of Polhó, municipality of Chenalhó by the criminal group called “Los ratones”.
Even the violence in Mexican territory forced more than 600 people to move to Guatemala, so the authorities of the Central American country deployed the Belt of Fire plan to guarantee the safety of Guatemalans and the Mexicans themselves who try to escape from the criminal groups that persecute them.
Prior to the closure of the port, in 2022, agents of the National Guard (GN) evicted some 400 migrants who entered the facilities of the border port of Ciudad Hidalgo, in the Mexico-Guatemala division, in search of documents to regularize their situation.
The migrants, mostly from Central America and Cuba and Venezuela, arrived at the crossing between the countries in search of their papers and, to exert pressure, gathered at the pedestrian crossing and tried to enter by force, but were removed by Mexican agents.
