Hundreds of trucks jammed the Mariposa Gate in Nogales, Sonora, attempting to avoid the 25% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Since dawn, cargo trucks began forming long lines, stretching up to 8 kilometers and causing several hours of waiting to enter Nogales, Arizona. On the Mexican side, there are only four lanes for heavy trucks, while the American side has up to eight lanes for transporters.
Many tanker trucks transported dozens of Ford cars, which will also be subject to tariffs, even though they are from a U.S. company. Despite the heavy vehicular movement, the city’s traffic was not significantly affected due to good coordination by the Municipal Traffic Department.
Nogales Mayor Juan Gim Nogales dismissed the idea that the increased cargo movement was due to the tariffs imposed by President Trump. “I don’t think it’s due to the tariffs because it would be too soon; in fact, the effects of the tariff increases are seen months after the adjustments are made to the values of the goods… I think it’s normal. The lines of cars are due to the long weekend in Mexico,” he said.
