Twelve days after Donald Trump took office as the 47th president of the United States, uncertainty persists over the possibility of mass deportations of irregular migrants. However, in Coahuila there have been no such operations, and migratory transfers have continued as usual.
What has the deportation process been like in Coahuila?
Although there is no evidence of mass deportations, repatriation processes continue to develop normally. This Saturday morning, a bus left the facilities of the new building of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Piedras Negras, escorted by units of the National Guard and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of Coahuila.
According to immigration authorities, 39 people were transferred in this operation, while on Friday the repatriation of 25 migrants was recorded, adding up to a total of 64 in the last two days. These transfers are made to the southeast of Mexico, in compliance with current immigration regulations.
It is worth mentioning that the buses that transport the migrants leave the INM facilities and travel along the fiscal route until they join federal highway 57, where they continue their journey escorted by federal and state security corporations. Several buses remain in the INM parking lot ready to carry out these movements, given that the migrants’ stay in these facilities is temporary.
How many people are there in a migration situation?
Currently, it is estimated that in Piedras Negras there are around 290 people in a migration situation, most of them sheltered in spaces such as the Casa del Migrante Frontera Digna, the Salvation Army shelter, and other shelters managed by Catholic and Christian Church organizations.
The Government of Coahuila, in coordination with federal authorities, maintains constant monitoring of the migration situation in the border region to guarantee respect for the human rights of migrants and security in the repatriation processes.
