Progress. With electric buses, Tamaulipas joins the federal electromobility strategy

With the aim of modernizing public transport, advancing the decarbonization of the sector and promoting sustainable mobility, the State of Tamaulipas has decided to join the electromobility strategy led by the Federal Government. Through the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment (SEDUMA), the state seeks to be a key player in the implementation of electric buses as an alternative to the use of fossil fuels in urban transport.

The state participates in the national plan for the transition to sustainable public transport, promoted by the Federal Government, with a view to the electrification of the urban system in the next decade.

In a meeting organized by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI) and the National Bank of Public Works and Services (BANOBRAS), the projection of the demand for electric units in the next ten years was discussed, both at the state and municipal level.

Towards an electrification of local public transport

The head of SEDUMA, Karina Lizeth Saldívar Lartigue, highlighted the interest of Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya in actively participating in this initiative, with the intention that Tamaulipas be part of the national effort to create economies of scale in the production of electric buses.

One of the strategies proposed is to ensure that the transition to electromobility is financially viable for states and municipalities, considering options such as the purchase or rental of electric units.

Among the projects under analysis is the possibility of implementing this strategy in the BRT public transport system that is being developed in the municipalities of Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira.

The meeting had a technical and strategic focus, requesting detailed information from state and municipal governments on the characteristics of their public transport fleets, including dimensions, passenger capacity and specific needs per city.

In addition, local authorities were asked to make a projection of the number of 9.5-meter electric buses that will be required each year during the next decade.

This bus model was chosen for its efficiency on urban routes and its ability to replace smaller units, offering a sustainable and operational solution for growing cities.

Electromobility as a national policy

Tamaulipas’ commitment to electromobility is part of the national strategy promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who has pointed out the importance of taking advantage of existing public policies in each entity to strengthen sustainable transport.

BANOBRAS’ participation in this initiative is key, since the bank plays a fundamental role in financing sustainable public transport projects, facilitating the acquisition of electric units and investment in charging infrastructure.

Environmental impact and modernization of transport with electric buses
The progress towards the electrification of public transport will bring with it environmental and economic benefits. The reduction of polluting emissions is one of the main objectives, allowing Tamaulipas to contribute to the fulfillment of national climate goals.

Furthermore, the modernization of transportation with electric buses represents an improvement in the quality of service for users, offering more efficient, quieter vehicles with less impact on air quality in cities.

The effort to standardize information at a national level and develop an efficient analysis of the demand for electric buses will allow Mexico to consolidate a sustainable mobility system. Tamaulipas, by joining this initiative, reinforces its commitment to the transformation of urban transportation and positions itself as a benchmark in electromobility at the state level.

With this strategy, the country is moving towards a cleaner and more resilient transportation model, where the electrification of fleets becomes a viable and scalable solution to improve urban mobility in the future.
